Christmas in NY

Christmas in NY

It’s true what they say, there’s nothing quite like Christmas in NY.  With bigger than life decorations and beautiful window displays, it’s easy to get into the holiday spirit. Let’s explore all that NY has to offer during the most wonderful time of the year.

Making Memories

My daughter asked to celebrate her 10th birthday in NYC, Kevin McCallister style.  Nice hotel, big toy store, central park, the works.  Let the planning begin!

Christmas is a very busy time in NYC.  Being able to do everything that we wanted to do required a fair amount of advance planning.  First things first, the hotel.  Kevin and his family stay at the Plaza Hotel.  I looked and….chA-ching!!  So, for the price of one night at the Plaza, we were able to spend three nights at the new Margaritaville Times Square Hotel.  We loved it!

The Margaritaville hotel has a great feel.  Nothing like palm trees to instantly feel like you’re on vacation!  I loved the vibrant colors and island feel. For a NYC hotel room, I felt that the room was spacious and very comfortable.  A comfortable bed after a full day of exploring the city was a welcome sight.

Getting Around

When visiting NYC, the one thing I agonize over more than anything is transportation.  Especially when traveling with kids, I want easy, reliable transportation.  I looked into several different options and ultimately decided that for our itinerary, a Hop On Hop Off bus was our best option.  This was one of the best decisions we made when planning for this trip!  I purchased the discounted 72 hr pass and this gave us 3 days of sightseeing and hassle free transportation. It was great!  I chose the Top View bus company, but there are several to choose from.

There many fun ways to get around NY. Bikes, Pedicabs and Horse Drawn Carriages are all popular choices. We rented bikes to ride in Central Park. It was definitely a unique experience!

Rockefeller Center

Ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza was at the top of my daughter’s to-do list.  We were able to reserve our ice time before even leaving home by purchasing tickets from the website, and I’m so glad that we did.  Unfortunately, the people who were trying to purchase same day tickets were turned away.

Although it was a rather expensive outing, we were happy to have had this iconic Christmas in NY experience with our daughter.

Mangia Mangia

Second on my daughter’s to-do list was pizza! Yummy, delicious, nothing else in the world quite like it NY pizza! There are pizza options on every block, but we found one near our hotel that we really liked and went three times! Yup, three. It was that good! Carnegie Pizza….highly recommend!

Another fun dining option, especially with kids, is Ellen’s Stardust diner. The wait staff sings broadway hits and more. It was a lot of fun and who doesn’t love diner food?!?

Calling all Potterheads

If you are a Potterhead like my daughter and me, NY has you covered! First, you can see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on broadway. I’ve seen it twice…yes it’s that good!

Second, you can visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter store. Holy Moly! You could spend half a day here. Stop in to explore the largest collection of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts products under one roof. It was pretty incredible! They have a Virtual Reality experience, a Butterbeer Bar, and of course, the wand experience. Learn more about planning your visit to the Harry Potter store by visiting their website.

Oh, There’s More

Lastly, below is a list of the other things we did during our Christmas weekend in NY.

  • FAO Schwarz
  • M&M Store
  • Hershey Store (milkshakes and SMores, yes please!)
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Aladdin on Broadway
  • Macy’s
  • Night Bus Tour
  • Bryant Park
  • American Girl Doll Store

The New York skyline is stunning!

I hope that you feel inspired to plan a Christmas in NY weekend of your own! With enough advance planning, your trip will go very smoothly. Ours was a memorable weekend for sure.
